It’s Electric!

Drew and I woke up at about 5:30 this morning- for the first time ever, it was from the incessant beeping of our video monitor losing its connection instead of the pitter patter of little Griffin feet. We had lost power, which was a double bummer since it’s currently freezing & it meant our furnace wouldn’t work either.

We just turned off the monitor and went back to sleep for another hour or so until Griffin actually DID wake up. He asked if we could watch cartoons, or at least turn on the light, and was a little confused when we told him neither would happen. But once it was fully light out, he just went into the living room and played like a champ! Not a single complaint or whine- not a word was even mentioned! When Evvie got up, she was content to play too! It made me so happy to see that they don’t NEED to be connected or put in front of a screen. It’s merely a convenience.

Drew, on the other hand, didn’t take it nearly as well. There was lots of sighing and sarcastic remarks, and snits, especially once his cell phone died. He, apparently, IS tethered to his technology. It honestly got a bit annoying to listen to.

The worst part for me was that I couldn’t make tea or the hot breakfast I was planning! At least not initially. The power kicked on around 8:30, and I had time to cook, warm up the house and charge my phone. Buuuut, then it went out again. This time, Drew completely lost it, as the Broncos were playing an early game. But the kids, again, could not be bothered. Griffin was in the midst of watching the Incredibles when it went out again, and when the movie clicked off he just said “well, I’ll just have to watch it later” and went off to play.

I was so proud of the kids and so thankful to learn that they are not actually reliant on screens. It really made me want to cultivate that and spend most of the weekends with no tv, tablets or phones. I just know there will be NO buy in from Drew!

Luckily the power came back on for the day around noon so we didn’t freeze & I was able to make dinner, do laundry & do all the other chores that require electricity!
